Rules: post the names of all the files in your WIP folder regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people comment with the title that most intrigues them and then post a little snippet of it or tell them something about it!

I have a massive amount of fics from a massive number of fandoms in my WIP folder (94 fics in 34 fandoms... and yes, I do have a separate bunnies folder for fics that haven't been written at all yet), many of which haven't been worked on literally over a decade. But they do have somewhat descriptive names, at least in regards to fandom and pairing! So hopefully that'll make it easier for people to pick ones that intrigue them :)

Also, fyi for those who are bothered by it, there is a lot of HP.

We've made it through week two of [community profile] 3weeks4dreamwidth! I only missed posting one day this week, which I think is pretty great for my track record. Here's to a great week 3 as the fest wraps up!

I strongly suggest watching the movie first.

Don't click on the spoiler cut here in this post before you've seen it.

Here's my non-spoilery review post of the movie: https://tinny.dreamwidth.org/811203.html

    the twist explained - spoiler!

So Zheng Yuxing's secret is that he's gay.

The gender of his crush, DJ Ming, is never mentioned throughout the movie.

In spoken Chinese, the personal pronoun is gender neutral, so that works fine.

Of course, Chinese movies by law have to have subtitles, and the movie makers apparently decided to intentionally mislead the audience by using the female pronoun whenever Zheng Yuxing talks about Ming. I'm not quite sure why they did this. I don't think it was to get around censorship because an offscreen mention of a gay relationship would not be subject to censorship. But maybe they just enjoyed making the audience assume the wrong thing at first, just like with Chen Chen's secret.

Zheng Yuxing's doorman friend at the disco accuses him of bringing Chen Chen as his beard because he was dumped by Ming.

Ming never speaks when Zheng Yuxing calls him on the phone, so we never hear his voice.

The first real clue is when Zheng Yuxing's father tells the other parents that his son would never do anything to Chen Chen. This is slightly annoying, since in a western show/movie, I would expect this to be a normal attitude. In all Asian dramas I've seen so far, this is sadly not the case. Everyone always assumes that all men are horndogs and not to be trusted when alone with a woman. So, in a Chinese movie, this was the first dead giveaway.

The second real clue is when Chen Chen and Zheng Yuxing arrive at the music festival and look at the poster of DJ Ming, and Zheng Yuxing says, "Now you owe me a secret," because even though we don't see Ming's face, Chen Chen does and that alone constitutes knowing his secret.

The third clue is in that same scene, when some girls pass by behind them and say "Ming is so handsome" (帅 shuai), which is - just like in English - only used for men. The English subs ruin this, too, by translating it as "Ming is so cool." :/

All of these are easy to miss, but taken together, they're pretty clear and obviously intentional.

    my thoughts - also spoilery
I loved all the "we need to be brave and more honest with ourselves" talks Zheng Yuxing and Chen Chen had with each other, because she unknowingly helped him accept himself. And it's just such a wonderful motto for a movie in general. <3

I loved how everyone is wrong about everyone else in this movie. The teacher is wrong about the kids, Chen Chen is wrong about her mother, her parents are wrong about her, Zheng Yuxing is wrong about Ming. It's so well done.

I still don't know whether Chen Chen originally tried to kill herself in the pool or just went in there to think, and then came up with a better solution than killing herself. The scene at the festival with the lady on the string implied that going to the festival/music had something to do with... saving her life? Or just making her see reason and becoming an adult? I have no idea, that was a bit too symbolic for me. :D

I wonder in hindsight how open and naive Zheng Yuxing is at school. If he felt inadequate or unaccepted for being (secretly) gay, I would suspect him to be a bit less carefree. It's possible for him to be like this, that he really doesn't care about being an outsider, I just thought it less likely, because the movie shows us in other scenes how very lonely he is. For me, it doesn't match with the carefree attitude.

It's almost cut off by the fade to black, but when Zheng Yuxing collapses in the hotel lobby, after his father stands back at first, he then rushes to his side after all. <3

I love how Zheng Yuxing is not at all interested in school or doing well in the exam, and I expected this to be shown as a negative thing in a Chinese movie. But it wasn't. He was obviously very motivated to be the best at music, and he put all his energy into that, rightly so, and in the end he did make his dream come true. I thought that was amazing.

Even after watching it several times, I'm still not sure whether Zheng Yuxing and Ming really were in a relationship or whether Zheng Yuxing was just following around his crush like a puppy and it was never reciprocated from the start. Both seem possible to me. He himself isn't even sure if it was a relationship or if there was a breakup or not. My personal headcanon is that Ming treated Zheng Yuxing like a groupie, probably had sex with him, but wasn't really interested in a relationship.

I'm not sure he really would have kissed Chen Chen - that kiss felt like fan service more than anything. I guess I can see a young guy who's just been told that he's her crush go, 'Maybe I will like kissing her,' and only after that finding out that he really doesn't. But - again - it seems unlikely. He would have hugged her instead. (That said, I am not complaining about the fanservice. I am a fan of that kind of service.)

I wish we could have seen a little bit more about their relationship in the coming years, not just her going to the concert. That felt a tiny bit abrupt, but overall, the movie answered all my other questions, and it felt like a satisfactory ending.

ETA: there's one scene where Zheng Yuxing and Chen Chen post a video on social media from a location they don't want to reveal. Zheng Yuxing says to the camera, "我们在哪里" (women zai nali? Where are we?). This is a tradition between Wu Lei and his fans. He will make a selfie video like that with his fans wherever he has a public appearance. I checked, he started doing that in 2018, so the video in this movie is not the origin of the tradition but rather a fourth wall break.

Wu Lei and Zhang Zifeng in Upcoming Summer

Upcoming Summer (盛夏未来) is a 2021 Chinese coming-of-age movie starring Wu Lei as Zheng Yuxing, wannabe DJ, and Zhang Zifeng as Chen Chen, A-student. The two high-schoolers get thrown together through a white lie she tells her parents after failing the gao kao. Zheng Yuxing was a no-show at the exam, and the two bond.

Does it have a happy ending?
    ending spoilers
Well. If the happy ending is them being together at the end: no. If the happy ending is them becoming good friends: yes. It's a coming of age movie and as such fleeting and melancholy. I loved this movie, and even as a die-hard romance fan, this movie gave me everything I wanted.

Where to watch? You can watch it on Netflix here. (I did not manage to find it by title within Netflix itself, no matter what I selected as my preferences. If the link I gave here doesn't work for you, try googling for it.) (If you can't find it, dm me.)

This movie is brilliant. The main characters all have secrets - and each one is slowly revealed throughout the movie. I'm not going to spoil any of them - although I suspect that I would get more of you to watch it if I did. *g*

But trust me on that one: you should go into it unspoiled. I did, and it shook me. I wasn't quite sure I had picked up on the hints or not, and whether I had imagined it all, so I went and watched the whole movie again the next day. I had not imagined it. The movie is very cleverly done. (It's admittedly a bit harder to see if you don't understand a bit of Chinese and are unfamiliar with cdrama tropes, and even then you can miss it.)

The movie plays with different expectations a lot. What parents expect of their children, what teachers expect of their students, what children expect of their parents, what people expect of life. What viewers expect of a coming-of-age movie. :) A lot of those expectations are challenged throughout the movie, and the characters have to reexamine their choices. (And the viewers have to rewatch the movie. :D)

The two students are very cute. They both act like 18-year-olds would, in my opinion. Opinionated, stubborn, looking for connection, hopelessly romantic. It all feels realistic. I'm in no way objective when it comes to Wu Lei. I loved him in this, that's no surprise. I didn't know Zhang Zifeng before this, but she's amazing, too.

My favorite character in the whole movie is probably Mrs Qu, the teacher. She's no-nonsense but caring at the same time (within the constraints of being a teacher in China).

I really don't want to say anything more about the movie, because any plot points I could mention are taking away from the experience, and there is not that much plot in the first place.

But what I should mention is that one of the major elements of the movie is music. Zheng Yuxing, wanting to become a DJ, has a very intimate connection to music and to the electronic music scene. Very unusually for a Chinese movie, the main songs are western songs, and they are used really well.

Music: Coldplay & the Chainsmokers | Kidnap Kid | May Day
    The two western songs:

No superhero, no fairytale bliss, just someone I can turn to, somebody I can kiss. I want something just like this.

The friends we made along the way. A journey you can't recreate.

The rest of the OST is by popular Taiwanese(?) band May Day (五月天). Here are two songs from the OST, one performed by May Day itself (and he sings in such a beautiful low register for this <3) , and one performed by Wu Lei and Zhang Zifeng:

reeby10: the lower half of a person laying on grass and reading with the words 'time to escape' and a ripped looking border (reading)
    [personal profile] reeby10
    Reading
    • Read some more of Grim Tuesday by Garth Nix. Remembering a lot more of it as I go!
    • I started reading Thrawn: Treason by Timothy Zahn (Star Wars: Thrawn #3). Or, technically picked it back up, but I'd only listened to a half hour of it last time I got it from the library. I'm enjoying it a lot.
    • I started reading Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo. I read like... a chapter of it several years ago before having to return it to the library. This time I will finish though, because it's the current read for my work's DEI book club! Very pleased one of my noms was picked and it's good so far.
    • I think I kept forgetting to put on these posts, but I started rereading Deep Secret by Diana Wynne Jones a few weeks ago, and I read some of that this past week. It's my pick for my friends and my annotation swap this year. It's way longer than I remember it being, but it is very fun!
    • Ficwise, I've been reading a bit of this and that for a bunch of Thai fandoms. Kind of just going through my AO3 tbr. Also went through the whole Thundercloud Rainstorm tag on AO3 and am sad there's not more fic :(
    Watching
    • The roommate and I watched the last episode of Running Man Thailand. I'm so sad it's over! But it was a fun last episode for the funniest show I have ever seen in my life lol I really hope they do another season! I know a lot of people want a second season with the same cast, but I'd love to see some new people and what shenanigans they get up to.
    • The roommate and I started watching Sunset x Vibes. This is one of MosBank's shows and I really wanted to see something with them after seeing them as guests on an ep of Running Man Thailand. Excellent choice, it's really fun so far!
    • The roommate, best friend, and I watched the latest episode of Only Friends: Dream On. Rome punched Jack in the face multiple times, so all of my dreams have come true lol
    • The roommate, best friend, and I watched the latest episode of Love Upon a Time. I've been looking forward to the Songkran episode, and it was fun! I do love time travel media where they start a current tradition.
    • The roommate, best friend, and I watched the latest episode Magic Move. I'm liking Phitcha a lot so far and I'm interested to see all the drama that's going to come with him showing up. Can't say I'm that into the main pairing, but I do like the secondary one.
    • The roommate, best friend, and I watched the latest episodes Love of Silom. I'm really loving this show! Wayu is so sweet with his nephew/son, and I love that they're already forming a cute little family with Krit. Of course I think there is def some drama coming up.
    • The roommate, best friend, and I watched the first episode of Enemies with Benefits. This is the first GL main we're watching, and it's good so far! Jan is one of my favorite GMMTV actresses, so very excited for more.
    • The roommate, best friend, and I watched an episode of Shine. I am a hearty meh on this show so far. Honestly probably wouldn't be continuing if I wasn't watching with friends...
    • The roommate and I saw Devil Wears Prada 2 in theaters. It was good! Lots of callbacks to the original that I thought were done well
    Listening
    • I'm really vibing with PERSES' new song Turn Me On. It's got a great beat, as their songs tend to, and it just keeps getting stuck in my head.
    • Also LYKN's new song If Only. I wasn't super into it the first time I heard it, but it's really been growing on me!
    • I started listening to podcasts again! I listened to this year's Olympics episodes from Ice Tea Pod. Very fun and a reminder that I really should try to keep up better with figure skating outside of the Olympics even if most of my faves are retired now.
    Writing
    • I wrote some poetry, mostly starting to catch up on NaPoWriMo prompts since I completely failed on doing any in April.
    • I also wrote a bunch on a Thundercloud Rainstorm fic I started awhile back. It just needs one more quick scene and then it's finished!
    Learning
    • I worked a lot on the Thai alphabet. I have been able to read a few words out in the wild! I think doing the ig series plus a practice writing app has been helping a lot. I have Pimsleur's Thai out from the library again but I haven't picked it back up yet.

Food related questions that will make you hungry

What is a food you loved as a child but do not enjoy anymore? I guess the closest thing is that I had a phase as a kid where I drank milk like crazy. Like half a gallon or more a day until I drank so much that I made myself really sick. I am now vegan so I don't drink cow milk anyway, but I could not stomach it after that.

What’s a food you used to dislike but now enjoy? What changed? Blueberries! I used to haaaate them and wouldn't even eat/drink anything with mixed berries bc of them. And then one day I accidentally ordered something with blueberries and... it was good?? No idea what changed.

If you could eat only one cuisine for the rest of your life, which would you choose? Chinese. Very versatile and tasty and easily veganizable if not already vegetarian/vegan.

What food instantly makes you feel comforted or happy? Mac and cheese, because the southern will probably never really leave me lol

What food reminds you most of your childhood? Maybe beans and weenies? I feel like we ate that a lot when I was a kid. But also potato soup, which we probably honestly ate even more bc it was really cheap. It was actually the first thing I was allowed to make on my own!

Are there any foods you think are overrated? Burgers. They're fine every once in awhile, but they aren't that great tbh.

What traditional dish from your country would you recommend to a visitor? Ok this isn't really a dish, but I'm going to say milkshakes bc I love milkshakes. I joke that they're my favorite food group lol

Who is the best cook you know, and what makes their food special? Uhh maybe the best friend? I think she's maybe a better baker, but she does make good food and she's always willing to experiment with making vegan food for me.

    Movies

I went to see a German movie ("Ach diese Lücke, diese entsetzliche Lücke") at the theatre this month, which was good, I can recommend. (Although it is a lot about death, so CW for that. ymmv. I thought it strikes a wonderful balance between sad and funny.) It's an adaptation of the second book of Joachim Meyerhoff's autobiographical novel series. The first one is about him growing up in a mental asylum because his father works there, and I've neither read the book nor seen the movie. This second movie is about him deciding to study acting in Munich. All the roles are excellently cast, especially Senta Berger as his eccentric grandmother. Since it's all set in the 90s, everything looks wonderfully retro (and everyone's smoking everywhere omg). There's not a lot of plot, it's all about him growing into his own, and about dealing with death. I really enjoyed the movie, and I could watch it in its entirety for once without it making me nauseous. Yay!

    TV finished

    The Company

All done! I really loved this 30-episode show about a time traveller whose time machine is an antique shop. It started out a bit weird in ep 1, but found its pace quickly after that. Watch it on viki here. I'll put the ending under a spoiler cut:
    The Company ending spoilers here
I did not like the ending. I mean, they tried to soften it, and it could have been worse, but... I expected something happier. They had all the cards, they could have given them their happy ending - they could even have resurrected his original lover if they'd tweaked it right - any of these would have been possible. Instead, they took one of the ML's memories away, and the other's time machine.

To not make it all that depressing, I guess, they meet again for the first time at the very end. ...How? It's bittersweet at best, and it makes no sense! How did he get there without a time machine?

The whole thing reminded me of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and like with everything you've seen done before, the impact just lessens. It worked for me back then, it is still one of my favorite movies!, but here I was disappointed. Pity, because the rest of the show was very sweet and much better than I'd expected.

People tell me that it's supposed to be a happy ending, sending them into a time loop, but imho there are a few points that contradict that. If they wanted to do that, they could have done it more cleanly and elegantly. But maybe I really just misunderstood? Who knows.

Anyway, that dampened my enjoyment of the show just a little bit. I would still recommend it. It's par for the course for cdrama, bittersweet is all you can hope for. At least it's not outright tragic.

    Cinderella Closet

I watched this Japanese drama on Netflix - all 12 short episodes of it - within a week. It's about a young woman with little self-esteem meeting a crossdressing man who helps make her more confident by giving her fashion advice and doing her makeup. Uhhh, okay? Of course then they fall in love. It's a bit tropey in places, but it repeatedly does the right things where it counts, like affirm that it's okay to be genderfluid, that he can wear what he wants, that being confident is what makes you beautiful, not what you're wearing, etc. I also really liked both their parents and how they reacted to seeing them together. It packs a lot into its short running time, and I think it got all the important points across well. I liked it overall. He is very pretty in female clothing, too. <3 Watch it on Netflix here.

I watched the almost hour-long cut of the milk endorsement live stream Wu Lei did last week, and thoroughly enjoyed that. It's the usual annoying product endorsement, but I enoyed watching my blorbo. Also, Migaku now supports bilibili, such a game changer! It means I got Chinese and English subs with it, and learned some idioms and the word "volleyball". \o/ (I got Zhu Yilong "oh noes everybody's taller than me" flashbacks when he stood next to the women's volleyball team. :D) I watched it on bilibili here.

    TV new (ongoing)

I finally started Wu Lei's Ride Now vlog (the season from 2022, where he goes to a snow field near Ulan Bator and celebrates his 22nd birthday by sleeping in a tent at -25C). The English title has nothing to do with the original title, except for the fact that it's a pun with the word "ride" in it? (The original title 岂有此理 is an idiom, meaning "unreasonable" or "absurd" or "this makes no sense", and replacing the first character with the word "ride" gives you 骑有此理, and I don't know what exactly that means, but maybe something like "biking makes sense"? Idk.) There's no biking in the season I watched (up to ep4) at all, anyway, but there's horse riding, so I guess that counts. It confused me at first. In any case, it's very cute, and Wu Lei's enthusiasm for sleeping in a tent at -25C against the advice of his team is just so very him. Also, I keep thinking about the poor guides who have to lead him through the wilderness while he juggles his selfie stick and doesn't wear his goggles. Lack of self-confidence is not one of his traits, for sure. Unfortunately, the camera movements made me nauseous eventually, so I had to stop after four eps. I'll pick it up again once I feel up to it. I watched it through this youtube playlist of his fanclub, which has engsubs.

    TV continued

One more ep of Our Times, the retro Wu Lei show, now on 6/36. He's still cringe in some ways (omg he bought himself a mink coat, what a douche), and I don't quite understand Hou Minghao's character's decisions, but hey. I'm mostly watching for the leads (Wu Lei and Hou Minghao), but I also like the setting. I haven't seen a show this focused on opening up of the business sector in China, and it's actually a period I know a bit about already, so that's interesting to see. It's on wetv and youtube.

I'm finally making headway on finishing my half-finished shows from months ago. First up: A Moment But Forever. I had to rewatch/skim 27 and 28 until I remembered where I had left off, but then got back into it quickly and am now on episode 33/36. It's getting really interesting with people still wanting to kill the ML and the FL trying to save him again and again without giving away her secrets (which the gods have specifically forbidden her from divulging). The evil players have revealed themselves openly now, and it's heading towards the final confrontation. The main draw of this still is how philosophical it is, and how much they're talking about what's right or wrong, about the power of love, and how to shape the kind of world you want to live in. It's quite thoughtful and deep (and the reason AvenueX recced it and I like it (although of course I'm also in it for the romance)). Looking forward to how they're going to wrap this one up. It's on iqiyi.

the rest - some first impressions and youtube channel recs - under the cut )

I thought this month was below average, and it was. But 11 things is not nothing.

With thanks to [personal profile] pitchblackrenegade for the original post.

Anyone who comments through May 15th will receive one line from a poem I love.

Will it inspire you? Will it be someone familiar to you, or someone you've never heard of? Just drop a comment — no prompt needed, unless you feel compelled to give me one to find a line for.

    Reading
    • Just fic this week. Been reading a lot of JunDylan after stalling out on some VegasPete fics.
    Watching
    • The roommate and I watched an episode of Running Man Thailand. So fucking funny, as usual.
    • The roommate and I finished rewatching We Are. Love this show so much!! PondPhuwin are everything, and Pond especially is adorable in this role. Kind of funny compared to his current role as Thee tbh.
    • The roommate, best friend, and I watched the latest episode of Only Friends: Dream On. The reactions to the ArnoldDean video were kind of overblown, but I think it'll all shake out pretty quickly so it's whatever. RomeRaffy having some cute moments, but I'm worried for the next ep...
    • The roommate, best friend, and I watched the latest episode of Love Upon a Time. Love that we're getting bits of Klao's past but also it's not quite fitting together yet.
    • The roommate, best friend, and I started watching Magic Move. It's cute so far! Very curious how the fake-childhood-besties-to-lovers storyline will go.
    • The roommate, best friend, and I started watching Love of Silom. Enjoying it a lot so far even if it's different than I was thinking it would be from the trailer! Poom as Wayu is soooo pretty, wow.
    • The roommate, best friend, and I started watching Shine. It's fine so far? Idk, Be on Cloud productions are a super mixed bag for me, so we'll see. I would appreciate them getting some lighting though.
    • The roommate and I went to see The Silence of the Lambs in theaters for the 35th anniversary. It was fun! I've only seen it once before and didn't remember much, so it was cool to see on the big screen.
    Listening
    • I've been getting more into ATLAS lately, so I've been watching a lot of their music videos. Still a lot of PERSES and LYKN happening as well. There's been a lot of new music out lately!
    Writing
    • I finally finished the ArmTae fic I've been working on for the past two months!! Almost 10k, which is pretty wow for me. Very happy to have finished it though :)
    Learning
    • Nothing.

ETA: I know one of them got eaten by DW when I tried to post... It's too late to figure that out, so I will try to fix it tomorrow. Fixed!

I've been brainstorming all day what to do for my day's post, struggling to come up with something good, and I finally decided to just go with a top 5 post. It's easy! It's versatile! It's themed!

Now, I know most ppl looking at this post are not going to have any idea what it is from the title. So, some explanations are in order.
